Issue description

Depending on the machine, this code indicates a break in the ground circuit wiring (often a ghost code for unpopulated circuits), a throttle sensor voltage dropping below the minimum threshold, or an erratic/open signal from the right lower link draft sensing pin to the hitch controller.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Machine Configuration: If the code reads 'Ground signal open circuit (not used)', verify with a diagnostic tool if the XCM or instrument cluster is configured for an option the tractor does not have.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Throttle Position Sensor or the Right Draft Sensing Pin. Look for chafed wires, rodent damage, or tight bends.

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor. Check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture inside the connector housing.

  4. Multimeter Voltage/Continuity Test: Turn the key to the ON position. Check for a 5V reference signal at the sensor connector. Perform a continuity test on the ground wire from the sensor connector back to the XCM or Engine ECU chassis harness.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to protect the ECUs.

  2. Isolate the Fault

    If the multimeter test reveals a broken ground wire in the chassis harness, trace the harness back from the sensor (Throttle or Draft Pin) to the main cab bulkhead connector.

  3. Repair the Wiring

    Splice and solder the broken ground wire, sealing it with marine-grade heat shrink, or replace the damaged pigtail connector if the break is at the plug.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the 5V reference and ground circuits test perfectly under load, the internal potentiometer of the Throttle Sensor or the strain gauge in the Draft Pin has failed open. Unbolt the faulty sensor and install the replacement.

  5. Calibrate and Clear

    Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH diagnostic tool (or equivalent CAN-bus DTC eraser) to clear the inactive 1030 code. If a draft pin or throttle pedal was replaced, perform the specific component auto-calibration procedure via the instrument cluster or diagnostic laptop.
