New Holland NH 14002 – ADIC (Advanced Control Panel / Instrument Cluster) or ICU (Instrument Cluster Unit): Rear PTO speed short to Ground

This code indicates that the signal voltage from the Rear Power Take-Off (PTO) speed sensor has dropped to zero because the circuit is shorted to ground. This typically happens when the sensor's signal wire chafes against the tractor's metal chassis, the connector is contaminated with water/debris, or the sensor itself has suffered an internal short.

   Visual Inspection: Locate the Rear PTO speed sensor on the rear transmission/PTO housing. Inspect the wiring harness routing from the sensor to the cab for pinched wires, melted insulation, or chafing against the frame.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor harness. Check the pins for corrosion, bent terminals, or water ingress, which can bridge the signal wire to the ground wire.

   Circuit Testing: Using a digital multimeter, test the signal wire on the harness side for continuity to ground. If continuity exists while disconnected from the sensor, the wiring harness is shorted and must be repaired.

   Sensor Testing: If the harness tests fine, check the sensor pins for an internal short to ground. If the sensor is internally shorted, it must be replaced.

   Prepare tractor for repair

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Repair wiring harness (if shorted)

   Locate the damaged section of the wire. Cut out the chafed wire, splice in a new section using weatherproof heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-loom the harness. Secure it away from moving parts with zip ties.

   Replace PTO speed sensor (if faulty)

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the Rear PTO speed sensor. Remove the retaining bolt (typically an M5 or M8 hex bolt) securing the sensor to the PTO housing. Carefully pull the old sensor out of the housing (be prepared for a small amount of oil seepage). Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic oil. Insert the new sensor into the housing and torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the sensor wiring harness.

   Restore power

   Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor.

   Clear fault codes

   Clear the fault codes via the ADIC menu or a diagnostic scan tool.

   Verify repair

   Engage the rear PTO and verify that the RPM speed is accurately displayed on the dash and the code does not return.
