New Holland NH 14042 – Engine Controller (EDC7) or ADIC (Advanced Data Instrument Cluster): Engine coolant temp short to Ground
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the signal voltage from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor has dropped below the acceptable threshold, meaning the circuit is shorted directly to a ground source. This can be caused by an internally shorted sensor, a wiring harness that has rubbed bare and is touching the engine block/chassis, or a fault within the controller.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Locate the coolant temperature sensor on the engine block or thermostat housing. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor for chafing, melted insulation, or bare wires touching the metal engine block (which would cause a short to ground).
Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor plug. Check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins inside the connector.
Circuit Isolation Test: With the sensor disconnected, turn the key to the ON position. Check if the active fault code changes from NH 14042 (Short to Ground) to NH 14041 (Engine coolant temp short to VCC or open circuit). If the code changes to open circuit, the sensor itself is internally shorted and must be replaced. If the code remains NH 14042, the short to ground is in the wiring harness between the sensor connector and the ECU/Cluster.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes. Ensure the engine is completely cool to avoid burn injuries from hot coolant.
Drain/Catch Coolant
Place a clean catch pan under the engine area where the sensor is located. You do not need to drain the whole system, but some coolant will escape when the sensor is removed.
Remove the Sensor
Unplug the electrical connector. Use a deep socket or wrench to carefully unscrew the faulty coolant temperature sensor from the engine block/housing.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM coolant temperature sensor into the port. Tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as these brass sensors can snap).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor until it clicks securely.
Refill Coolant
Top off the radiator or coolant reservoir with the appropriate OAT/Heavy-Duty engine coolant to replace any fluid lost during the swap.
Test
Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and monitor the dashboard temperature gauge. Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard display to clear the inactive NH 14042 fault code. Verify that the code does not return as the engine reaches operating temperature.
