NH 14051

New Holland NH 14051 – ADIC (Advanced Digital Instrument Cluster) or INST (Instrument Controller): Fuel level sensor short to VCC or open circuit

Issue description

This code indicates that the machine's "brain" is detecting a signal voltage from the fuel level sender that is out of the expected range (too high or completely open). As a result, the fuel gauge will stop working.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the fuel level sensor, typically mounted on the top of the fuel tank.

  2. Disconnect the sensor connector (e.g., C066) and inspect the pins for dirt, corrosion, or damage. Clean the mating pins and connector thoroughly.

  3. Turn the key on and validate that the sensor is receiving its required power supply (usually 5V or 8V) at the input pin from the ADIC.

  4. If the reference voltage is missing at the sensor, check the output directly at the instrument controller pins to determine if the harness has an open circuit or if the cluster is faulty.

  5. Measure the resistance across the fuel level sensor terminals. If the circuit reads completely open (infinite resistance), the sender unit has failed internally.

  6. Test the signal wire for a short to VCC (power) or a short to ground along the harness routing.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or a short to VCC in the harness between the ADIC and the fuel tank, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail.

  3. Replace the Sender Unit

    If the sensor failed the resistance test: Clean the area around the top of the fuel tank to prevent debris from falling in. Remove the mounting bolts or retaining ring holding the fuel level sender in place. Pull the old sender unit and its rubber gasket out of the tank. Install the new fuel level sender unit with a new gasket to ensure a proper seal. Secure the mounting bolts.

  4. Reconnect and Reassemble

    Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor. Reconnect the battery.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Turn the ignition on. Verify that the fuel gauge is now registering the correct fuel level. Clear the NH 14051 error code from the ADIC memory and test the tractor for normal operation.
