New Holland NH 14052 – ADIC (Advanced Display Instrument Cluster) or INST (Instrument Cluster): Fuel level sensor short to Ground

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the fuel tank's sending unit is reading excessively low (near zero volts), which the system interprets as a short circuit to ground. This will typically cause the fuel gauge to read erratically, read completely empty, or fail to move at all.

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the battery and work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, as you will be working near fuel vapors.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the fuel tank sending unit to the main cab connectors for chafing against the chassis, rodent damage, or pinched wires.

  3. Inspect the main connector blocks and the connector at the sending unit for heavy corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

  4. Disconnect the plug at the fuel level sensor and use a digital multimeter to check for continuity to ground on the signal wire heading back to the ADIC to isolate if the short is in the harness or the sensor.

  5. Check if the sending unit float is physically stuck or if the internal resistor track is damaged.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental sparks.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Clean the area around the top of the fuel tank to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the fuel.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If your multimeter test proved the short is in the harness, trace the wire back to the chafed/damaged area. Splice and solder the broken wire, seal it with heat-shrink tubing, and secure the harness away from sharp metal edges using zip ties or loom.

  4. Remove the Faulty Sensor (If Applicable)

    If the sensor itself is internally shorted, disconnect its electrical plug. Remove the retaining screws or the twist-lock ring securing the sending unit to the fuel tank.

  5. Extract the Unit

    Carefully pull the sending unit and float arm assembly straight up and out of the tank.

  6. Install the New Part

    Insert the new fuel level sensor into the tank, ensuring the float arm has full range of motion and does not bind against the tank walls. Always use a new rubber gasket or O-ring to prevent fuel leaks.

  7. Reassemble

    Tighten the retaining screws/ring to specification. Reconnect the electrical plug.

  8. Test

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Verify that the fuel gauge registers the correct fuel level and that the ADIC/Instrument Cluster no longer displays fault code 14052.
