New Holland NH 14101 – Engine Controller (ECM) or Instrument Cluster / Dash: Fuel contaminated sensor Not connected

Issue description

The control system has detected an open circuit, missing signal, or physical disconnection from the Water-in-Fuel (WIF) sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator. Check the bottom of the filter to see if the sensor is physically unplugged (which directly triggers the "Not connected" code).

  2. Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring pigtail leading to the sensor. Look for snagged, broken, or frayed wires, which are common since the sensor is exposed near the bottom of the engine bay.

  3. Connector Pin Check: Disconnect the sensor plug and inspect the pins for corrosion, dirt, or diesel fuel intrusion. Clean the contacts if necessary.

  4. Continuity Test: If the sensor is plugged in and the wiring looks intact, test the harness for continuity back to the main harness/controller to rule out a broken wire further up the line.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the tractor, engage the parking brake, and allow the engine to cool.

  2. Drain the Filter

    Place a catch pan under the primary fuel filter. Open the drain valve on the sensor to empty the fuel/water mixture from the filter housing.

  3. Disconnect the Sensor

    Press the retaining clip on the electrical connector and unplug the wiring harness from the water-in-fuel sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Unscrew the old sensor from the bottom of the fuel filter.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the bottom of the fuel filter (ensure the O-ring is properly seated to prevent air/fuel leaks). Do not overtighten.

  6. Reconnect Wiring

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor.

  7. Bleed the Fuel System

    Pump the primer lever on the filter head until the fuel coming out contains no air bubbles.

  8. Test

    Start the engine, check the bottom of the filter for leaks, and verify that the NH 14101 fault code has cleared from the dash.
