NH 14901

New Holland NH 14901 – ADIC (Advanced Display Instrument Cluster): Engine controller not present (EDC7)

Issue description

CAN Bus communication failure indicating the machine's instrument cluster has lost its data link connection with the engine controller (Bosch EDC7 / EDC7UC31) and can no longer detect it on the network. This typically causes the engine to stall, lose acceleration, or crank over but fail to start.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN Bus wiring harness and connectors between the instrument cluster and the engine controller for chafed wires, severed cables, or loose/corroded pins.

  2. Perform a physical ECU 'tap' test by wiggling the ECM connectors or lightly tapping the ECM case to check for internal hardware/solder degradation (if communication temporarily restores, the ECU has failed internally).

  3. Connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to verify module communication and isolate the fault to the CAN lines or the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's batteries before servicing the ECM or CAN bus wiring to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged CAN bus wiring between the ADIC and the EDC7 module, repair the wiring harness and clear the codes.

  3. Remove the ECM

    If the wiring is intact and the ECU failed the physical tap test, remove the Bosch EDC7UC31 module from the engine block.

  4. Repair or Replace the ECM

    The EDC7UC31 module must either be sent to a specialized ECU repair service or replaced entirely.

  5. Programming / Cloning

    A replacement EDC7UC31 must be programmed with the specific tractor's software and immobilizer data. This is typically done by cloning the EEPROM data from the old unit to the new one, or by flashing the new unit using the CNH EST software.

  6. Reinstall and Clear Codes

    Reinstall the programmed ECM, reconnect the batteries, and use the CNH EST to clear the NH 14901 code from the instrument cluster.
