NH 15003

New Holland NH 15003 – Steering Controller: Steering wheel control proximity sensor short circuit

Issue description

The electronic system has detected a short circuit (either to ground or to a voltage source) in the circuit of the proximity sensor located on the steering column.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T7 Series
  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270
  • T7030
  • T7040
  • T7050
  • T7060
  • T8 Series
  • T9 Series
  • TM Series
  • TM 175
  • SP280
  • SP480

Check the cause

  1. Remove the steering column shrouds and visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the steering wheel proximity sensor for pinched wires, chafing, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the proximity sensor and inspect the electrical connector for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. With the sensor disconnected, use a digital multimeter to check the sensor's signal wire in the main harness for continuity to ground or to the 12V/5V reference wire.

  4. If the harness tests good, the short circuit is likely internal to the proximity sensor itself.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Power down the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Sensor

Remove the plastic shrouds/covers surrounding the steering column to expose the steering wheel control proximity sensor.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

Unbolt or unclip the proximity sensor from its mounting bracket on the steering assembly.

  5. Wiring Repair

If your diagnostics revealed a short in the wiring harness rather than the sensor, locate the damaged section, splice in new wiring, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

  6. Install New Part

Mount the new OEM proximity sensor. Ensure it is seated correctly and gapped to the steering wheel trigger point according to the specific model's service manual tolerances.

  7. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall the steering column covers.

  8. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition to the ON position and use a CNH diagnostic tool (EST) to clear the NH 15003 fault code. Test the Fast Steer / steering system to verify the code does not return and the system engages properly.
