New Holland NH 15007 – Steering Controller (Hydraulic Fast Steer System Processor (Module KA)): Split valve LVDT short circuit

Issue description

The LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) is a position sensor used to monitor the movement and position of the split valve spool within the hydraulic steering system. A short circuit means the controller is detecting abnormal voltage (either shorted to ground or shorted to power) on the sensor's circuit, preventing the system from accurately determining the valve's position.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the Fast Steer hydraulic valve block and inspect the wiring harness leading to the Split Valve LVDT sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points.

  2. Disconnect the LVDT sensor connector and the Steering Controller (KA) connector to inspect pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.

  3. Test the sensor signal wire for continuity to ground using a multimeter.

  4. Test for a short between the sensor's power supply wire and the signal/return wires.

  5. Measure the internal resistance of the LVDT sensor itself to check if the internal coil has shorted out.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Valve

    Locate the Fast Steer hydraulic manifold (usually located under the cab or near the steering orbital valve, depending on the specific model).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the Split Valve LVDT.

  4. Wiring Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wiring and splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors.

  5. Sensor Replacement

    If the wiring is intact and the sensor itself is internally shorted, unthread the LVDT sensor from the split valve housing (cap fittings as necessary for minor hydraulic fluid loss). Install the new LVDT sensor and torque to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the sensor.

  7. Clear and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the NH 15007 fault code. Perform a Fast Steer calibration procedure so the controller can learn the new LVDT sensor's end-of-stroke voltage values.
