NH 2004

New Holland NH 2004 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Chassis Controller: P' - Handbrake error

Issue description

This code indicates a conflict or invalid signal regarding the parking brake (handbrake) status. It is triggered as a safety interlock when the system detects that the handbrake is engaged (or the switch is sending an engaged signal) while the operator is attempting to move the machine. It can also indicate a short or open circuit in the handbrake switch wiring.

Applies to these machines

  • T6
  • T7
  • T6000
  • T7000
  • T7030
  • T7040
  • T7050
  • T7060
  • TM115
  • TM190
  • TS80
  • TS115
  • TSA100
  • TSA135
  • Workmaster
  • TT series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the parking brake is fully disengaged before shifting the shuttle lever to rule out operator error

  2. Inspect the physical handbrake lever mechanism to ensure debris is not preventing the lever from fully releasing and striking the switch

  3. Disconnect the handbrake switch and use a multimeter to test for continuity, verifying the switch properly opens and closes when actuated

  4. Inspect the chassis harness and the 5-pin or 3-pin connector for corrosion, broken wires, or a short to ground

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and chock the wheels to prevent rolling since you will be working on the parking brake circuit.

  2. Locate the Switch

Access the base of the handbrake lever assembly (typically located inside the cab console to the side of the operator's seat, or under the cab floor depending on the specific model).

  3. Disconnect Harness

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the parking brake switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

Unbolt the retaining nuts or screws securing the switch to the handbrake mounting bracket.

  5. Install New Part

Mount the replacement OEM switch and adjust the retaining nuts so that the handbrake lever properly depresses the switch plunger when the brake is released.

  6. Reconnect and Test

Plug the electrical harness back in. Start the tractor and test the handbrake. The 'P' light on the dashboard should turn on when the brake is pulled and turn off when released. Shift the shuttle to ensure the NH 2004 code does not return.
