NH 2041

New Holland NH 2041 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or XCM (Multi-function Control Module): Clutch 3 solenoid open circuit / Low Range PWM Valve Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module is not detecting electrical continuity through the circuit that operates the Clutch 3 (or Low Range) Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) solenoid valve. This condition is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected or corroded plug, or an internal failure (open coil) within the solenoid itself.

Applies to these machines

  • T5 Series (e.g., T5.115)
  • T6 and T6000 Series (e.g., T6010, T6020, T6030, T6050, T6070)
  • T7 and T7000 Series
  • T5000 Series (e.g., T5060)
  • TM Series (e.g., TM120 through TM190)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission valve block for visible damage, rubbing, or disconnected plugs.

  2. Disconnect the Clutch 3 solenoid connector and check for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture ingress.

  3. Measure the resistance of the Clutch 3 solenoid coil using a multimeter. An open circuit (infinite resistance) confirms a dead solenoid coil that must be replaced.

  4. Check for continuity between the solenoid connector and the TCM/XCM harness to rule out a broken wire in the chassis harness.

  5. Swap the Clutch 3 solenoid with an adjacent clutch solenoid (e.g., Clutch 2 or Clutch 4). If the fault code follows the solenoid, the solenoid is definitively faulty. If the code remains NH 2041, the issue is in the wiring harness or the controller.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the transmission control valve block (typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing).

  3. Clean the area thoroughly around the solenoids to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during removal.

  5. Remove the retaining bolt or snap ring holding the solenoid in the valve block.

  6. Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body. Have a shop rag ready to catch any residual hydraulic fluid.

  7. Lubricate the O-rings on the new replacement solenoid with clean transmission fluid.

  8. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  9. Reconnect the electrical connector.

    Reconnect the electrical connector.

  10. Turn the key on and clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic "H" routines (via the instrument cluster) or a dealer scan tool.

  11. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure.

Crucial Final Step: Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure. Replacing a clutch solenoid changes the hydraulic fill characteristics of the clutch pack, and failing to calibrate can result in jerky shifting or further fault codes (such as Code 24: Synchro clutches not calibrated).
