New Holland NH 2044 – Transmission Control Module (TCU) or Chassis/Electronic Control Unit: Clutch 1 solenoid short circuit

The controller has detected an electrical short in the circuit responsible for actuating the Clutch 1 proportional solenoid valve, which controls hydraulic fluid flow to engage that specific transmission clutch pack.

   Inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the Clutch 1 solenoid for exposed wires, rubbing, or a short to ground/power (high voltage).

   Check the sealed dual-pin electrical connector at the solenoid for water ingress, corrosion, or melted pins.

   Test the resistance of the Clutch 1 solenoid coil using a multimeter. A reading of near-zero ohms indicates an internal short circuit within the copper actuator windings, meaning the coil has failed.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the main powershift transmission control block or hydraulic distribution manifold (often mounted on the side or top of the transmission housing). Identify the Clutch 1 solenoid.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Remove the Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical wiring plug. Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve spool. If the entire cartridge valve needs replacing, unthread the spool from the manifold.

   Install the New Part

   If replacing the spool, lubricate the new O-ring seals with a light grease before insertion. Thread the spool into the block and tighten to the specified torque (e.g., 26 to 39 Nm for standard CNH transmission spools).

   Mount the Coil

   Slide the new solenoid coil over the spool and install the retaining nut. Tighten the nut to the specified torque (e.g., 2.7 to 5.4 Nm). Do not overtighten, or you may crush the coil housing.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the wiring harness and battery. Use a diagnostic tool or CAN-bus DTC eraser to clear the inactive NH 2044 code from the ECU.
