New Holland NH 2045 – Transmission Control Module: Clutch 1 Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

This fault code indicates an electrical issue where the control module detects a break in the circuit for the solenoid that controls the "Clutch 1" pack. An "open circuit" typically means a disconnected plug, a broken wire in the harness, or an internal failure (burnt-out coil) within the solenoid itself. Because the solenoid cannot receive power, the transmission will be unable to engage the specific powershift gear associated with Clutch 1.

Check the cause

  1. Check Battery Voltage: Low battery voltage can prevent the clutch solenoids from receiving adequate power for proper engagement, sometimes triggering false solenoid codes.

  2. Inspect Fuses: Check the transmission module fuses to ensure the circuit supplying the solenoids has not blown.

  3. Visual Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission side cover/valve block. Look for rubbed wires, rodent damage, or a disconnected plug at the Clutch 1 solenoid.

  4. Continuity & Resistance Test: Disconnect the Clutch 1 solenoid. Use a multimeter to check the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. If it reads infinite resistance (OL), the solenoid coil is internally open and must be replaced. If the solenoid tests good, check the energize and return circuits in the harness for continuity back to the Transmission ECM.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block (usually located on the transmission side cover). Identify the Clutch 1 solenoid. Note: OEM manuals state that the valve body casting is typically marked with numbers or letters (e.g., 1, 2, 3 or A, B, C) to identify the specific speed clutch circuits.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the Clutch 1 solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the faulty solenoid off the valve stem. (If the entire valve assembly is faulty, unthread the cartridge from the valve block, being prepared to catch a small amount of transmission fluid).

  4. Installation

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining fastener. If replacing the whole cartridge, ensure the new O-rings are lubricated with clean transmission fluid before threading it into the block.

  5. Reconnection

    Reconnect the electrical harness plug to the solenoid.

  6. Calibration

    Reconnect the battery. Clear the fault codes using the tractor's onboard diagnostic display or a service tool. You must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure (often requiring the transmission fluid to be at operating temperature) to ensure the ECM learns the proper engagement pressures and timing for the new solenoid.
