NH 2061

New Holland NH 2061 – Transmission Control Module / Chassis Controller (MCM): F/R Synchro Potentiometer signal too high

Issue description

The Forward/Reverse (F/R) Synchronizer Potentiometer is sending a voltage signal to the controller that exceeds the expected upper limit. A signal too high typically indicates a short to voltage in the sensor wiring, an open ground circuit, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland TL Series (TL70, TL80, TL90, TL100)
  • New Holland TL-A Series (TLA 100)
  • New Holland T5 Series
  • New Holland TM Series (TM 175)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the F/R Synchro Potentiometer for chafing, pinched wires, or a short to a 12V power source

  2. Use a multimeter at the sensor connector to verify it is receiving a steady 5-Volt supply and has a clean ground

  3. Test the resistance sweep of the potentiometer to see if the resistance drops out or spikes out of range, indicating internal failure

  4. Ensure the shuttle lever switches are not disagreeing with the synchro position

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Locate the F/R Synchro Potentiometer on the exterior of the transmission housing.

  2. Disconnect and Inspect

Disconnect the sensor harness. Inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent terminals, which can cause high-resistance faults.

  3. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring tests good (proper 5V and ground), unbolt the faulty potentiometer and install the replacement part.

  4. Recalibrate the Transmission

After replacing the F/R Synchro Potentiometer, you must recalibrate the synchronizer clutches. Failing to do so will likely trigger fault code NH 2024 and the tractor may refuse to move into forward or reverse.

  5. Clear Codes

Clear the inactive NH 2061 code from the MCM and test drive the tractor, shifting between forward and reverse to ensure the shuttle engages smoothly.
