New Holland NH 2065 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Forward solenoid open circuit

Issue description

This fault code indicates an electrical "open circuit" in the forward directional solenoid. The forward solenoid is an electro-hydraulic valve responsible for directing hydraulic fluid to the forward clutch pack in the transmission. An open circuit means the electrical path has been broken—this is typically caused by a disconnected wire, a broken wiring harness, a corroded connector, or a burnt-out internal coil within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission control valve block. Look for severed wires, chafing, or damage caused by field debris.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the forward solenoid. Check for water intrusion, dirt, or corroded pins. Ensure the connector seats tightly.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the forward solenoid coil. If the reading shows infinite resistance (OL), the coil is internally broken (open) and the solenoid must be replaced.

  4. With the key ON and the shuttle lever moved to the Forward position, check for 12V supply at the harness connector. If voltage is present but the solenoid does not actuate, the solenoid is faulty. If no voltage is present, the issue lies upstream in the wiring, fuses, or the shuttle lever switch itself.

  5. Verify that the transmission clutch disconnect button (often on the gear lever) is not stuck, as this interrupts the electrical path to the forward/reverse solenoids.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the machine on a level surface, lower all implements, place the transmission in neutral, apply the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block (often on the side of the transmission housing or bottom of the Power Shuttle Control Valve). The forward solenoid is usually paired directly next to the reverse solenoid.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Unplug the electrical connector from the forward solenoid. Depending on the design, either remove the retaining nut at the end of the stem to slide the electromagnetic coil off, or unbolt the entire cartridge valve assembly from the valve body.

  5. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Thread it into the valve body and torque to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassemble

    Reconnect the electrical harness plug, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  7. Test

    Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the stored fault codes from the TCM, and test the forward/reverse shuttle operation to ensure smooth engagement and that the NH 2065 code does not return.
