New Holland NH 2068 – XCM (Multi-function Central Module) or Transmission Control Module: Reverse solenoid circuit fault / Clutch C solenoid valve short to +12V

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical anomaly—such as a short circuit to power, an open circuit, or an out-of-range voltage—in the circuit that commands the transmission's reverse engagement solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring between the XCM and the reverse transmission solenoid for wire breaks, chafing, or a short to a +12V power source.

  2. Check Connectors: Disconnect the reverse solenoid and inspect the electrical connector for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Test the Solenoid Coil: Measure the resistance of the reverse solenoid coil with a multimeter to check for an internal short or open circuit.

  4. Verify Inputs: Ensure that the shuttle lever switches, transmission disconnect switches (often on the joystick or gear shift), and relays are functioning correctly and not sending conflicting signals to the XCM.

  5. Check Supply Voltage: Verify that the supply voltage to the transmission control circuit is within tolerance and that no fuses are blown.

Repair steps

  1. Park machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate valve block

    Locate the transmission control valve block (often accessible from the top or side of the transmission housing, though floor access panels may need to be removed on some models).

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the reverse solenoid to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission valve body.

  4. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty solenoid.

  5. Remove hardware

    Remove the retaining hardware (this is typically a snap ring at the flow divider area or mounting bolts).

  6. Remove solenoid

    Carefully pull the old solenoid coil and plunger/valve assembly out of the transmission.

  7. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid to prevent tearing during installation.

  8. Install new solenoid

    Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining snap ring or bolts.

  9. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

  10. Clear codes and test

    Clear the fault codes from the XCM and test the machine under load to verify smooth forward and reverse engagement.
