New Holland NH 2075 – Transmission Controller: Calculated torque exceeds calibrated peak torque by more than 25%

Issue description

The system has detected an abnormal reading from the flywheel speed sensor (flywheel torque sensor). This is triggered when the sensor detects erratic signal periods or when the damper angle is physically out of range (below 50 degrees or above 85 degrees). This points to either an electrical failure of the sensor/wiring, a mechanical failure of the torsional damper, or a severe mechanical shock load.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Shock Loads: Determine if the machine recently experienced a severe implement jam or driveline shock that could have caused a legitimate torque overload.

  2. Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the flywheel speed sensor for corrosion, chafing, or loose pins.

  3. Sensor Signal Test: Use a diagnostic tool or oscilloscope to monitor the flywheel speed sensor output. Look for signal dropouts, unusable signals, or frequencies that are too high (ERPM greater than 300 with no usable signal).

  4. Mechanical Damper Check: If the electrical circuit and sensor are functioning properly, the mechanical torsional damper on the flywheel must be inspected for broken springs or excessive wear that is allowing the damper angle to exceed the 50-85 degree threshold.

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

    Clear the fault code using an Electronic Service Tool (EST) and operate the tractor to see if the code returns immediately (indicating a hard sensor/wiring failure) or only under heavy load (indicating a failing mechanical damper).

  2. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing electrical components.

  3. Access the Sensor

    Locate the flywheel speed sensor, which is typically mounted on the engine bell housing reading the flywheel/damper assembly. You may need to remove heat shields or brackets to gain access.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical harness. Remove the retaining bolt and pull the old sensor out of the housing. Install the new OEM flywheel speed sensor and torque the retaining bolt to factory specifications. Reconnect the harness.

  5. Mechanical Repair (If Necessary)

    If replacing the sensor does not resolve the issue, the tractor will likely need to be split between the engine and transmission to access and replace the mechanical torsional damper assembly.

  6. Recalibration

    After replacing the sensor or damper, reconnect the battery. Use the OEM diagnostic tool to clear the codes and perform a transmission and flywheel torque sensor calibration.
