NH 2077

New Holland NH 2077 – Transmission Controller (TCU): Flywheel Speed Sensor short circuit

Issue description

The electronic control system is detecting a short (either to ground or to a voltage source) in the circuit of the sensor responsible for reading the rotational speed of the engine's flywheel. Because of this short, the controller is not receiving a valid or plausible engine speed (RPM) signal.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness connection directly at the flywheel speed sensor. Look for disconnected plugs, corrosion, or wires that have rubbed through against the engine block or transmission housing.

  2. Multimeter Circuit Test: Disconnect the sensor. Using a multimeter, check across the speed sensor terminals on the harness side for a short circuit or an open circuit. Check between each terminal and a known good chassis ground to test for a short to ground.

  3. Sensor Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the pins of the sensor itself (e.g., 880 - 920 ohms between terminals 1 and 2). If it reads 0 ohms, the sensor is internally shorted.

  4. Air Gap Check: Ensure the sensor has not been struck by debris and that the air gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth is within factory specification.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    The flywheel speed sensor is mounted on the engine block, reading the ring gear on the flywheel housing. Depending on the engine model (e.g., FPT engines), it is typically located on the right or left side of the engine block near the bell housing.

  2. Clear Obstructions

    Depending on the tractor model, you may need to remove a starter motor heat shield, disconnect a heater return hose, or move a brake pipe slightly to gain clear access to the sensor.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor in the housing and pull the sensor straight out.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor (if applicable) and insert it into the housing. Torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall any heat shields or hoses removed during disassembly.

  6. Calibration

    Clear the fault codes. Because the transmission controller lost its engine RPM reference, you may need to perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure (often required for C1/C2/C3 clutch packs) to ensure smooth shifting after the repair.
