New Holland NH 2081 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): 4/5 Synchro Potentiometer signal too high
Issue description
This code indicates that the voltage signal returning from the 4/5 range synchroniser potentiometer is above the calibrated or expected maximum threshold. This typically points to a short to a high voltage source, an open ground circuit on the sensor wiring, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the 4/5 synchro potentiometer for physical damage, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Verify that the potentiometer is receiving a steady 5-volt reference supply and has a solid ground connection. An open ground will cause the signal voltage to default high.
Check the signal wire between the potentiometer and the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) for a short to a 12V power source.
Remove the potentiometer and test its internal resistance using a digital multimeter. While turning the potentiometer, measure the resistance across the pins. A healthy potentiometer should show a smooth, linear change in resistance (typically between 1.0K Ohms and 4.0K Ohms depending on the pin combination). If the resistance is out of limits, erratic, or open, the sensor is faulty.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Locate the 4/5 range synchroniser potentiometer on the transmission housing. Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector and unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket.
Install the New Sensor
Mount the replacement potentiometer, ensuring the rotary mechanism aligns correctly with the synchroniser linkage. Secure the mounting hardware and plug in the electrical connector.
Transmission Calibration
Because the TCU relies on precise voltage readings to know the physical position of the synchroniser, you must perform a transmission calibration after installing a new potentiometer. This is typically done through the tractor's H-Menu (diagnostic menu) or via a dealer diagnostic tool to teach the TCU the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage limits.
Clear Codes
Clear the NH 2081 fault code from the system and test drive the tractor to ensure smooth shifting between the 4th and 5th ranges.
