New Holland NH 2083 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Synchro 4 engaged error
Issue description
The transmission controller detects the synchronizer for 4th gear is engaged when it has not been commanded to do so, or it is mechanically/hydraulically stuck in the engaged position.
Applies to these machines
12 machines- TM120
- TM135
- TM150
- TM175
- TM190
- T5
- T6
- T6010
- T6070
- T7
- T8
- T9
Check the cause
Check the 4/5 Synchro Potentiometer for proper signal voltage to ensure the controller is not receiving a false engagement reading
Test the Synchro 4 Solenoid and its wiring for open circuits or shorts to 12V
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the transmission controller to the 4/5 synchro potentiometer and the Synchro 4 solenoid for chafing, breaks, or corrosion at the connectors
Check for mechanical binding in the synchronizer assembly or shift fork if electrical circuits are intact
Repair steps
Verify the Fault
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the fault and monitor the live voltage readings of the 4/5 synchro potentiometer.
Inspect Connections
Locate the transmission valve body. Disconnect, clean, and inspect the connectors for the 4/5 synchro potentiometer and the Synchro 4 solenoid.
Electrical Testing
Test the Synchro 4 solenoid for proper resistance. If it fails, replace the solenoid. Test the 4/5 Synchro Potentiometer; if it is providing an erratic or incorrect reading, replace the sensor.
Mechanical Inspection
If electrical tests pass, the issue is likely mechanical (e.g., a stuck synchronizer ring, damaged shift fork, or a stuck spool in the hydraulic valve body). Remove the transmission valve body or access cover to inspect the 4/5 synchronizer mechanism.
Recalibrate
After replacing any solenoids, potentiometers, or freeing a stuck synchronizer, you must perform a transmission calibration procedure using the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu or the CNH EST tool to relearn the clutch and synchro engagement points.
