New Holland NH 2087 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Synchro 4 solenoid short to 12v
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical circuit responsible for operating the Synchronizer 4 engagement solenoid is shorted to a 12-volt power source. When this occurs, the controller cannot properly regulate the ground/control side of the circuit, which can cause the solenoid to remain stuck on or fail to actuate, preventing the transmission from shifting into or out of the associated gear.

Check the cause
Visual Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the transmission valve block to the transmission controller. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom that could cause the solenoid control wire to touch a 12V supply wire.
Connector Inspection: Disconnect the Synchro 4 solenoid and the transmission controller. Check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that might be bridging the circuits.
Voltage Test (Short to Power): With the solenoid disconnected and the key ON, use a digital multimeter to probe the control wire at the solenoid connector. If you read 12 volts on the control/ground side, the wiring harness is shorted to power and must be repaired.
Solenoid Resistance Test: Measure the internal resistance of the Synchro 4 solenoid coil. If the resistance is near zero (out of OEM spec), the solenoid is internally shorted and requires replacement.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block (usually mounted on the side or top of the transmission housing). Identify the Synchro 4 solenoid (refer to the specific model's hydraulic schematic for exact placement on the block).
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic tests revealed 12V on the control wire, locate the damaged section of the harness, splice in new wiring using weather-sealed connectors, and re-loom the harness.
Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty Synchro 4 solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or snap rings holding the solenoid in the valve block. Pull the solenoid straight out. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid, secure the retaining bolts/clips, and reconnect the electrical connector.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the NH 2087 fault code.
Transmission Calibration
Because a transmission shift component was replaced or disrupted, you must perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure (often required to prevent subsequent codes like NH 2091-2097 "Clutch not calibrated").
