New Holland NH 2091 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): C3 Clutch not calibrated
Issue description
The transmission control system does not have a valid spring pressure or fill-time calibration value saved for the C3 clutch pack. The tractor's computer requires this calibration to know exactly how long it takes to fill the clutch with hydraulic fluid. Without it, the transmission cannot ensure smooth gear engagement, which can result in harsh, delayed, or missed shifts.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- 40 Series (5640, 6640, 7740, 7840, 8240, 8340)
- TS and TSA Series (TS115A, TS125A)
- T6 Series (T6.120, T6.155)
- TM Series (TM120, TM130, TM140, TM155, TM175)
Check the cause
Check for accompanying active electrical fault codes related to the C3 solenoid (e.g., E17, E40, E41, NH 2098, or NH 2099)
Inspect the wiring harness for an open or short circuit on the control wire between the C3 clutch solenoid and the ETC (pin 59 on some models)
Verify the power supply wire between the C3 solenoid and the +12V supply/fuse is intact
Ensure the transmission hydraulic oil is warmed up to operating temperature (ideally around 60°C) before attempting to run the calibration routine
Repair steps
Prepare the Tractor
Ensure the transmission oil is warm. Turn the ignition off, apply the handbrake, and place the gear lever in neutral.
Enter Calibration Mode
Hold both the upshift and downshift buttons on the gear lever and start the tractor. The display should show 'CAL' or the transmission oil temperature.
Set Engine Speed
Increase the engine RPM to the specified calibration speed (typically 1200-1400 RPM).
Initiate Calibration
Shift the shuttle lever into forward drive. The tractor will remain stationary.
Calibrate Clutches
Follow the on-screen prompts to cycle through the clutches (C1, C2, C3, C4). To calibrate C3, you generally need to push the gear lever forward into the higher range (e.g., gears 8-16 or C/D range).
Hold the Button
Press and hold the designated shift button (often the downshift/turtle button for C3). The engine RPM will rise and the display will show the calibration numbers scrolling.
Wait for RPM Drop
Keep holding the button until the processor detects a 50 RPM drop in engine speed, indicating the clutch has engaged. The screen will display 'End'.
Save and Exit
Release the button. Once all clutches are calibrated, turn the engine off to save the values, then restart the tractor. Note: If the calibration fails and throws a 'U' code (e.g., U28), the C3 solenoid or the internal clutch pack must be replaced.
