NH 2099

New Holland NH 2099 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Clutch C5 (17th Gear) Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module has detected an open electrical circuit in the wiring or the coil of the C5 clutch solenoid, preventing the solenoid from energizing and engaging the C5 clutch pack.

Applies to these machines

  • T6010
  • T6020
  • T6030
  • T6040
  • T6050
  • T6060
  • T6070
  • T7 Series
  • T8 Series
  • TM Series
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Trace the wiring harness from the Transmission Control Module to the C5 clutch solenoid for chafed wires, broken lines, or pinch points.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the C5 solenoid and inspect for water intrusion, corrosion, bent pins, or backed-out terminals.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the C5 solenoid using a multimeter (healthy is typically 7 to 15 ohms; 'OL' indicates internal coil failure).

  4. Turn the key ON and probe the harness side of the connector to ensure the TCU is sending the proper reference voltage/signal to the solenoid.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the transmission powershift valve block. The C5 clutch solenoid is mounted on this distribution plate alongside other clutch solenoids (C1, C2, C3, C4, etc.).

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness from the C5 solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or nut holding the solenoid to the valve block. Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out, being prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid.

  4. Installation

Lubricate the O-rings on the new C5 solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and torque the retaining fasteners to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnection

Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

Clear the NH 2099 fault code via the tractor's programmable display or diagnostic tool. You must then perform a transmission clutch calibration (Quickfill Adjustment) for the C5 clutch to ensure the engagement timing is correct and the tractor shifts smoothly.
