New Holland NH 3008 – ENGINE (Engine Control Unit / ECU): Coolant Temperature Signal - SOURCE LOW

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the engine coolant temperature sensor that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit in the wiring, a short to ground, or a completely failed temperature sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the coolant temperature sensor connector for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  2. Trace the wiring harness between the sensor and the Engine ECU. Look for chafed wires that might be causing a short to ground or a broken wire causing an open circuit.

  3. With the key ON (engine off), disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify that the ECU is supplying the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) to the connector.

  4. Measure the resistance across the sensor's pins. If the multimeter reads infinite resistance (open) or zero resistance (shorted internally), the sensor has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the engine coolant temperature sensor, which is typically threaded into the engine block near the thermostat housing or cylinder head.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Catch Coolant

    Place a clean catch pan directly under the sensor area, as removing the sensor will cause some engine coolant to leak out.

  5. Remove Sensor

    Using a deep socket or wrench, carefully unscrew and remove the faulty temperature sensor.

  6. Install New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM coolant temperature sensor into the housing. Tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can crack the housing or shear the brass sensor).

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Refill Fluids

    Top off the engine coolant reservoir with the correct OEM-spec coolant to replace whatever was lost during the swap.

  9. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the New Holland EST) to clear the inactive NH 3008 fault code.

  10. Test

    Start the engine and monitor the coolant temperature gauge on the dash or scan tool to verify it is reading accurately as the engine warms up.
