New Holland NH 3009 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Coolant Temperature Signal - NO SIGNAL

Issue description

This fault code indicates a "null" or missing signal from the engine coolant temperature sensor via the CAN bus. Technically, this means the control module is detecting an open circuit, a disconnected sensor, or a complete failure of the sensor to transmit data.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the coolant temperature sensor connector to ensure it is securely plugged in. A disconnected sensor is a primary cause of a 'NO SIGNAL' fault.

  2. Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness between the sensor and the Engine ECU for chafing, breaks, or an open circuit.

  3. Electrical Testing: Use a multimeter to check for continuity in the sensor wiring. Check for a short circuit to an external voltage source or ground.

  4. Sensor Resistance: Test the sensor's internal resistance across its pins. If it reads completely open (infinite resistance), the sensor has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool completely to avoid burn hazards from hot, pressurized coolant.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Slowly loosen the radiator cap to relieve any residual cooling system pressure.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the coolant temperature sensor (typically located on the engine thermostat housing or cylinder head water jacket).

  4. Remove Sensor

    Unthread the faulty sensor. Have the new sensor ready to install immediately to minimize coolant loss.

  5. Install New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM coolant temperature sensor into the housing. Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reconnect and Refill

    Reconnect the wiring harness securely. Top off the engine coolant to replace any fluid lost during the swap.

  7. Clear Codes

    Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool to clear the NH 3009 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the temperature gauge reads correctly and no leaks are present.
