New Holland NH 3011 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Air (boost) Temperature Signal - SOURCE LOW

Issue description

This code indicates that the voltage signal returning from the Air Intake/Boost Temperature Sensor to the controller has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This usually points to a short to ground in the sensor's wiring circuit, a completely failed sensor, or a severely corroded connector pulling the reference voltage down.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the boost/intake temperature sensor. Look for chafed wires rubbing against the engine block or intake piping that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. With the key ON and engine OFF, probe the sensor connector to verify the ECU is supplying the correct reference voltage (typically 5V). If there is no voltage, the short or break is in the harness or the ECU itself.

  4. Check the continuity of the signal wire and the ground wire from the sensor connector back to the ECU pins to rule out a harness short.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Air Intake / Boost Temperature Sensor. It is typically threaded into the intake manifold or mounted on the charge-air/intercooler piping just before the intake manifold.

  3. Remove the Harness

    Release the locking tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull it off the sensor. Remove any harness retaining clips if they restrict access.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Unthread the faulty sensor from the intake piping or manifold.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the port. Tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not over-tighten, as the sensor body can be fragile).

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Re-secure any harness clips.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition ON and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the NH 3011 fault code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return and that the sensor is reading plausible temperature data.
