Issue description

This code indicates that the engine control system is receiving a voltage signal from the fuel temperature sensor that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This condition typically points to an electrical fault (such as a short circuit to power or a failed internal thermistor) causing a falsely high reading, or a mechanical issue causing the fuel to genuinely overheat (such as a restricted fuel return line or a failing fuel cooler).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the 2-pin sealed oval plug at the fuel temperature sensor. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corrosion inside the connector that could cause a short circuit.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the reference voltage from the ECM. A normal reading across the sensor pins should be approximately 2.5 volts (± 0.2V) at standard operating temperatures. If it reads out of bounds, the sensor is internally shorted.

  3. Use an infrared thermometer on the fuel filter housing or fuel rail to verify if the fuel is actually overheating. If the fuel is genuinely too hot, check for a blocked fuel return line, a clogged fuel cooler, or operate the tractor with a fuller tank to prevent recirculated fuel from overheating.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

    Power down the machine, remove the ignition key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the fuel temperature sensor. Depending on the engine model, it is typically threaded directly into the primary fuel filter housing, the fuel manifold, or the engine cylinder block.

  3. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Prepare for fuel leak

    Place a shop rag or catch pan under the sensor location to catch any residual fuel that will leak out.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

    Use a wrench (typically a 19.00 mm spanner hex) to unthread and remove the faulty sensor.

  6. Install new sensor

    Thread the new OEM replacement sensor (M14 x 1.5 metric pitch) into the housing and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness plug until it clicks securely into place.

  8. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

  9. Clear fault code

    Turn the ignition on and use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible CAN-bus diagnostic scanner to clear the NH 3014 fault code.

  10. Test and verify

    Start the engine, inspect the sensor fitting for fuel leaks, and verify that the fault code does not return.
