New Holland NH 3015 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Temperature Signal - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the fuel temperature sensor to the control module has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold, indicating an open circuit typically caused by a broken wire, an unplugged connector, or a completely failed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the fuel temperature sensor and inspect the 2-pin electrical connector. Look for a disconnected plug, broken wires near the connector, or severe corrosion on the pins.

  2. Wiring Harness Test: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the wiring harness back to the Engine ECU. Test for continuity to ensure there is no break in the signal or ground wires. Also, verify the signal wire is not shorted to a power source (short to battery).

  3. Sensor Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the two pins of the fuel temperature sensor itself. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (open loop) or infinite resistance, the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the engine, remove the ignition key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the fuel temperature sensor. Depending on the engine model, it is typically threaded into the fuel filter housing, the primary fuel manifold, or near the high-pressure fuel pump.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Removal

    Place a shop rag under the sensor to catch any residual fuel that will leak out. Use a wrench (often 19mm) to unscrew and remove the faulty sensor.

  5. Installation

    Thread the new OEM fuel temperature sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as the brass casing can break).

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. Final Steps

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH EST) to clear the NH 3015 fault code. Start the engine, check for any fuel leaks around the new sensor, and verify the code does not return.
