New Holland NH 3017 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Fuel Temperature Signal - NO SIGNAL

This fault code indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication with the fuel temperature sensor. The system is detecting an open circuit, a disconnected sensor, or a complete lack of voltage/resistance feedback from the sensor on the signal circuit. Without this signal, the engine module cannot accurately calculate fuel density to optimize injection timing and fuel delivery.

   Visually inspect the fuel temperature sensor (located on the fuel filter housing, fuel manifold line, or near the high-pressure pump) to ensure it is physically plugged in.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

   Check wiring harness continuity for breaks or open circuits between the fuel temperature sensor connector and the ECU connections.

   Test the wiring for a short circuit to ground or short to an external voltage source.

   Measure the internal resistance of the fuel temperature sensor using a multimeter to see if the thermistor has failed internally (an open reading indicates a dead sensor).

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the fuel temperature sensor on the engine's primary fuel system manifold lines or fuel filter base.

   Disconnect and Inspect

   Unplug the 2-pin oval connector from the sensor. Clean any debris or oil from the area.

   Remove the Sensor

   Using a wrench (often a 19.00 mm spanner hex for CNH sensors), unthread the faulty fuel temperature sensor from the housing. Have a rag ready to catch any minor fuel spillage.

   Install the New Sensor

   Thread the new OEM sensor into the port. Ensure the hermetically sealed brass casing/threads are seated properly to prevent fuel leaks.

   Reconnect Wiring

   Plug the engine harness connector back into the sensor until it clicks securely.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive NH 3017 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the dashboard gauge readouts are functioning correctly.
