New Holland NH 3018 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC7: Boost Pressure Signal - ABOVE NORMAL

Issue description

The engine's electronic control system has detected that the turbocharger is producing excessive boost pressure beyond the acceptable operating limit. This condition will likely cause the engine to derate its power output or shut down to prevent mechanical damage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the turbocharger wastegate linkage and actuator to see if the wastegate is stuck closed or binding

  2. Check the boost pressure sensor to see if it is sending an artificially high reading to the ECM

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the boost pressure sensor to the ECM for a short circuit to the power supply (e.g., on pins A12/A23)

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and ensure the engine has cooled down.

    Turbocharger components get extremely hot.

  2. Locate the turbocharger and inspect the wastegate actuator rod and pivot point.

    Disconnect the actuator arm if necessary to test the wastegate flap for free movement. If it is seized, apply penetrating oil and attempt to free it. If the internal wastegate is permanently damaged or the actuator has failed, the turbocharger or actuator must be repaired/replaced.

  3. Locate the boost pressure sensor (MAP sensor) on the intake manifold.

  4. Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector and inspect the pins.

    Typically a 4-pin connector. Inspect for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  5. Verify the reference voltage and ground at the connector.

    Use a multimeter to rule out a wiring short.

  6. Remove the mounting hardware and pull the sensor from the manifold.

    If the wiring is intact and the wastegate operates normally, the boost pressure sensor has likely failed internally and is reading out of range.

  7. Install the replacement boost pressure sensor and reconnect the wiring harness.

  8. Clear the active fault codes from the ECM using a diagnostic tool.

    Test run the machine under load to verify that boost pressure remains within normal parameters and the code does not return.
