New Holland NH 3022 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / EDC): Boost Pressure Signal - ALL OTHER FAULTS

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving an 'implausible' or 'unacceptable' signal from the Boost Pressure Sensor (MAP sensor). The sensor is providing a voltage reading that does not logically align with the current engine operating conditions, but it is not a direct short-to-ground or open-circuit. In some specific instrument cluster contexts, this code can also trigger an 'Engine Overspeed Error' warning on the dash.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the 4-pin electrical connector at the boost pressure sensor for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture intrusion.

  2. Check the wiring harness between the sensor and the Engine ECU for chafing, partial shorts, or high resistance.

  3. Perform a plausibility check (Key On, Engine Off) using a diagnostic scan tool to compare the Boost Pressure Sensor reading to the Atmospheric (Barometric) Pressure Sensor reading. They should be nearly identical; if not, the sensor is likely skewed.

  4. Inspect the intake manifold and turbocharger plumbing for severe boost leaks, blockages, or a stuck turbo actuator that could cause erratic pressure fluctuations.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the boost pressure sensor, which is mounted directly on the intake manifold.

  3. Depress the locking tab and disconnect the 4-pin electrical harness from the sensor.

  4. Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the intake manifold.

  5. Carefully pull the old sensor straight out of the manifold.

  6. Clean the mounting port on the intake manifold, ensuring no dirt or debris falls into the engine intake.

  7. Lubricate the O-ring on the new boost pressure sensor with a small amount of clean engine oil to prevent tearing.

  8. Insert the new sensor into the manifold and secure it with the retaining bolt(s). Torque to OEM specifications.

    Do not overtighten, as the manifold or sensor housing can crack.

  9. Reconnect the 4-pin electrical connector until it clicks into place.

  10. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the NH 3022 fault code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return under load.
