NH 3024

New Holland NH 3024 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Atmospheric Pressure Signal - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The voltage signal being sent from the atmospheric (barometric) pressure sensor to the control module has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold. This is typically caused by a short circuit to a high voltage source, an open circuit on the sensor's ground wire, or an internal failure of the atmospheric pressure sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the atmospheric pressure sensor for chafing, melted insulation, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Scan Tool Verification: Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor the live data for the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor voltage.

  3. Disconnect Test: Unplug the sensor. If the live voltage drops to 0V (or a baseline low), the sensor is internally shorted and needs replacement. If the voltage remains high on the scan tool while unplugged, the signal wire in the harness is shorted to a power source.

  4. Ground & Reference Check: Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor connector is receiving the proper 5V reference from the ECU and has a solid, low-resistance path to ground. An open ground will cause a 'Source High' code.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine's ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the atmospheric pressure sensor. Depending on the specific engine (e.g., FPT/Iveco), it may be mounted directly on the intake manifold (often as a combined temperature/pressure sensor), on the engine block, or near the ECU.

  3. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the electrical pigtail from the sensor.

  4. Repair harness

    If the harness is faulty: Repair the short-to-power on the signal wire or splice/repair the broken ground wire.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

    If the sensor is faulty: Remove the mounting bolt(s) or unthread the sensor from its port.

  6. Install new sensor

    Clean the mounting surface and install the new OEM atmospheric pressure sensor. Torque to the manufacturer's specifications.

  7. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  9. Clear code and verify

    Turn the key to the ON position and use the diagnostic tool to clear the NH 3024 fault code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return to active status.
