Issue description

This is a critical warning indicating that the engine oil pressure has dropped below the safe operating threshold. It means the system is reading dangerously low oil pressure, which can lead to catastrophic engine failure if the machine is operated in this condition.

Check the cause

  1. Check Oil Level: Shut down the engine immediately and check the engine oil dipstick. Ensure the oil level is within the safe operating range.

  2. Inspect for External Leaks: Look for obvious external oil leaks around the oil pan, oil filter, crankshaft seals, and the oil pressure sensor itself.

  3. Inspect for Internal Leaks / Consumption: If the oil level is dropping but there are no external leaks, check the turbocharger (remove the charge air hose to look for oil pooling) and the crankcase vent for excessive blow-by sending oil into the intake.

  4. Verify Sensor Wiring: Inspect the wiring harness and connector going to the engine oil pressure sensor. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or a loose connection that could cause a false low-pressure reading.

  5. Mechanical Pressure Test: Connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine block in place of the electronic sensor. Start the engine and verify the actual oil pressure. If mechanical pressure is normal, the oil pressure sensor or its wiring is faulty. If mechanical pressure is low, the engine has a mechanical issue (e.g., failing oil pump, clogged pickup tube, or worn engine bearings) requiring heavy engine repair.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool down.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the engine oil pressure sensor on the engine block. (Location varies by engine model, but it is typically located near the oil filter housing or along the main oil gallery on the side of the block).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Depress the locking tab on the electrical connector and unplug it from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Old Sensor

    Using a deep socket or wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty oil pressure sensor from the engine block. Have a shop rag ready to catch any residual oil that drips out.

  5. Clean the Port

    Wipe the threaded port on the engine block clean of any debris or old thread sealant.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    If the new sensor does not have pre-applied thread locker/sealant, apply a small amount of liquid thread sealant or Teflon tape to the threads. Thread the new sensor into the block by hand to prevent cross-threading.

  7. Torque to Spec

    Tighten the sensor securely using a wrench (refer to your specific engine's service manual for exact torque specs, usually snug but do not overtighten as the brass threads can break).

  8. Reconnect Wiring

    Push the electrical connector onto the new sensor until it clicks into place.

  9. Test

    Start the engine. Verify that the NH 3028 fault code clears, the low oil pressure warning light turns off, and there are no oil leaks around the new sensor.
