New Holland NH 3029 – Engine ECU: Oil Pressure Signal - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The electronic control module is receiving a voltage signal from the engine oil pressure sensor that is above the normal operating range. This is typically caused by a broken wire (open circuit), a disconnected sensor plug, a wire shorting directly to battery voltage, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Oil Level: While this is a circuit/electrical code, always manually verify the engine oil level using the dipstick when an oil pressure warning is triggered.

  2. Inspect the Connector: Locate the engine oil pressure sensor on the engine block. Check the electrical plug for looseness, corrosion, or backed-out pins that could cause an open circuit.

  3. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the sensor back to the Engine ECU. Look for chafed insulation, broken wires (open circuit), or melted wires that might be shorting to a 12V battery source.

  4. Test the Circuit: Use a multimeter to test the sensor circuit for continuity and verify that there is no short to battery voltage in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Power down and disconnect battery

    Power down the machine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the engine oil pressure sensor/switch on the engine block.

  3. Unplug connector

    Depress the locking tab and unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove faulty sensor

    Using a deep socket or wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty oil pressure sensor from the engine block. Have a rag ready to catch any residual oil drips.

  5. Clean threaded port

    Clean the threaded port on the engine block, ensuring no debris enters the oil gallery.

  6. Install new sensor

    Thread the new OEM oil pressure sensor into the block by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it securely.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor, ensuring the plug clicks and locks into place.

  8. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  9. Verify repair

    Start the engine and monitor the dashboard. Verify that the red oil pressure warning symbol (old-fashioned oil jug shape) turns off and the NH 3029 fault code clears.
