New Holland NH 3034 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Oil Temperature Signal - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the engine oil temperature sensor that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold, typically indicating an open circuit caused by a disconnected plug, broken wire, or internal sensor failure.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the engine oil temperature sensor (usually mounted on the engine block near the oil filter housing/head). Check the electrical connector to ensure it is securely plugged in.

  2. Wiring Check: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor for chafing, cuts, or broken wires that would cause an open circuit. Check the connector pins for severe corrosion or pushed-out pins.

  3. Cold Start Data Comparison: Before starting a cold engine, scroll through the diagnostic screens on the cab monitor (ICU). Compare the engine oil temperature to the engine coolant and intake air temperatures. If the machine has been sitting overnight, they should all read roughly the same ambient temperature. If the oil temperature reads an extreme default value (e.g., -40°C or blank), the circuit is open.

  4. Multimeter Test: Unplug the sensor and measure the resistance across the sensor's pins with a multimeter. If the reading shows 'OL' (Open Loop / infinite resistance), the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the ignition.

  2. Cool engine

    Allow the engine to cool completely. This prevents burn injuries and allows the engine oil to drain down into the oil pan, minimizing fluid loss.

  3. Locate sensor

    Locate the engine oil temperature sensor on the engine block or oil filter head.

  4. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor with brake cleaner or a rag to prevent dirt and debris from entering the engine oil system when the sensor is removed.

  5. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.

  6. Prepare for oil catch

    Place a small catch pan beneath the sensor location to catch any residual oil.

  7. Remove sensor

    Using a deep socket or wrench, carefully unthread and remove the faulty sensor.

  8. Install new sensor

    Thread the new replacement sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  9. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  10. Check oil level

    Check the engine oil dipstick and top off the oil if a significant amount was lost during the swap.

  11. Clear code and test

    Turn the ignition on and use your diagnostic tool (or the onboard display) to clear the NH 3034 fault code. Start the engine, verify that the code does not return, and check the sensor area for oil leaks.
