NH 3040

New Holland NH 3040 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): HS Power stage cold start heater relay - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The control module has detected that the voltage signal from the cold start heater relay (which controls the engine's glow plugs or intake grid heater) is abnormally high. This typically indicates a short circuit to power (VCC) or a short to the battery within the relay itself or its wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the cold start heater relay. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or exposed copper that could be causing a short to a 12V power source (VCC).

  2. Remove the cold start heater relay and test it with a multimeter. Check for internal shorts across the control pins.

  3. Inspect the relay block and ECU pins for corrosion, water ingress, or debris that could be bridging the connections and causing a false high-voltage reading.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Locate the Relay

Locate the cold start heater relay, which is typically found in the main fuse/relay panel or mounted near the engine intake heater.

  3. Inspect and Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire and wrap it securely with electrical tape or heat shrink.

  4. Replace the Relay

If the wiring is intact but the relay tested faulty (internally shorted to VCC), remove the old relay and install a new OEM replacement.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the NH 3040 fault code from the Engine ECU.

  6. Test Operation

Cycle the key and start the tractor to verify that the cold start heater operates normally and the fault code does not return.
