New Holland NH 3043 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Adapt.cylinder balancing Cylinder 1 - SOURCE HIGH
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine's adaptive cylinder balancing system has detected an abnormal condition specifically on Cylinder 1. A "SOURCE HIGH" designation typically means the control module is reading a signal voltage that is above the normal operating range (often a short to battery/power) on the injector circuit, or the system is maxing out its fuel trim compensation limits trying to balance the power contribution of Cylinder 1.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- T6000 series
- T6010
- T6070
- T8 series
Check the cause
Active Diagnostics: Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST or Jaltest) and run an active cylinder balance test and a cylinder cut-out test to monitor the real-time fueling state of Cylinder 1.
Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading from the Engine ECU (EDC7) to the Cylinder 1 fuel injector. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or a short circuit to a high voltage source.
Injector Solenoid Test: Measure the electrical resistance of the Cylinder 1 injector solenoid to verify it is within OEM specifications and not internally shorted.
Mechanical Condition Check: Because adaptive balancing compensates for power loss, verify that Cylinder 1 does not have a mechanical issue (such as low compression or a valve train issue) causing the ECU to over-fuel the cylinder to maintain balance.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes and ensure safety while working on the Engine ECU and fuel system.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to a high voltage source in the harness, repair the damaged wiring or replace the injector pigtail connector.
Access the Injector
If the injector is faulty, clean the area around the fuel rail and valve cover to prevent debris from entering the engine. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to Cylinder 1.
Remove the Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp and carefully extract the fuel injector from the cylinder head.
Install the New Injector
Install the replacement fuel injector. Crucial: Always use a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.
Reassembly
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and high-pressure fuel lines, torquing all fittings to the exact OEM specifications to prevent high-pressure fuel leaks.
ECU Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Using your diagnostic tool, program the new injector's calibration/trim code (IQA code) into the Engine ECU so the module can properly balance the fuel delivery.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the NH 3043 fault code from the EDC memory and run the engine to verify that the cylinder balancing is now operating within normal parameters.
