Issue description

Indicates an issue with the cylinder balancing (injector compensation) for Cylinder 5. A 'SOURCE HIGH' condition means the control unit is commanding maximum positive compensation (fuel trim) for Cylinder 5, but the cylinder is still underperforming. This typically points to a restricted/failing fuel injector, a loss of mechanical compression in that specific cylinder, or an electrical issue (such as high resistance or an open circuit) on the injector 5 wiring circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Verify engine symptoms for rough idle, misfires, loss of power, or excessive smoke to confirm a physical cylinder contribution issue.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and the Cylinder 5 fuel injector for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause high resistance.

  3. Measure the resistance of the Cylinder 5 injector coil with a multimeter to ensure it falls within OEM specifications.

  4. Perform a relative compression test using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a manual compression test to rule out mechanical issues (e.g., bad valves, worn piston rings).

  5. Ensure there are no fuel leaks from the high-pressure rail or transfer tubes leading to Cylinder 5.

  6. Verify that the correct IMA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) trim code for the Cylinder 5 injector is programmed into the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the battery before working on the engine wiring or high-pressure fuel system.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector on the Cylinder 5 circuit, repair or replace the injector harness.

  3. Replace Injector

    Thoroughly clean the area around the Cylinder 5 injector to prevent debris from entering the engine. Remove the high-pressure fuel line (transfer tube) and return line connected to the injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head. Clean the injector bore and install a new copper sealing washer on the new injector. Install the new injector, torque the hold-down clamp to OEM specifications, and reconnect the fuel lines.

  4. Program Injector Code

    Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to enter the new injector's trim code (IMA code) into the ECU. This is critical; the cylinder balancing function cannot work correctly without the exact flow rating code of the new injector.

  5. Bleed Fuel System

    Prime the fuel system to remove any trapped air.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the NH 3044 fault code, and run the engine to verify smooth operation and ensure the code does not return.
