NH 3045

New Holland NH 3045 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Unit / ECM): Adapt.cylinder balancing Cylinder 3 - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an electrical fault on the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 3. A "SOURCE HIGH" condition typically means the ECU is detecting an open circuit, abnormally high resistance, or a short to power in the Cylinder 3 injector solenoid or its wiring harness. Because of this electrical fault, the ECU cannot balance the cylinder, which will likely result in a misfire, rough running, and engine smoke.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 3 fuel injector for chafed wires, melted insulation, or breaks.

  2. Disconnect the electrical plug at the Cylinder 3 injector and check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could cause an open circuit.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the Cylinder 3 injector solenoid and compare to OEM specifications. An infinite reading (OL) confirms internal failure.

  4. With the injector unplugged, turn the key ON and check the harness side for a short to voltage.

  5. If wiring tests fine, swap the Cylinder 3 fuel injector with the injector from another cylinder (e.g., Cylinder 1 or 2). Clear codes and run the engine to see if the fault code follows the injector or remains on Cylinder 3.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access fuel injectors

    Remove any engine cowlings or the valve cover (if the injectors are located under the cover on your specific engine model) to access the fuel rail and injectors.

  3. Repair wiring harness

    If the diagnostic checks pointed to a wiring issue, repair the broken wires or replace the engine injector wiring harness.

  4. Clean injector area

    If the injector is faulty, thoroughly clean the area around the Cylinder 3 injector to prevent dirt from entering the engine.

  5. Disconnect fuel line

    Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line from the injector and the fuel rail. Cap the rail fitting.

  6. Remove faulty injector

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt and carefully pull the injector from the cylinder head.

  7. Clean injector bore

    Clean the injector bore, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed.

  8. Install new injector

    Install the new fuel injector, ensuring it is fitted with a new O-ring and a new copper sealing washer.

  9. Reinstall hold-down clamp

    Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specification.

  10. Reconnect components

    Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and the electrical connector.

  11. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  12. Clear codes and program ECU

    Use a diagnostic tool (such as the New Holland Electronic Service Tool) to clear the NH 3045 fault code. (Note: On many FPT common rail engines, the new injector's calibration code/IQA code must be programmed into the ECU using the diagnostic tool).

  13. Verify repair

    Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that the engine runs smoothly and the code does not return.
