NH 3046

New Holland NH 3046 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Adapt.cylinder balancing Cylinder 6 - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The engine control module has detected an imbalance in the power contribution of Cylinder 6. The system has reached the maximum allowable positive fuel correction limit for Cylinder 6, meaning it is underperforming and the computer is commanding maximum fuel to compensate, but it is still not enough.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T7 series tractors
  • New Holland T8 series tractors
  • New Holland CR series combines
  • New Holland CR9090
  • New Holland CX series combines
  • New Holland CX8080
  • New Holland CX8090

Check the cause

  1. Check fuel supply pressure and inspect fuel filters for restrictions causing starvation

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors to the Cylinder 6 injector for chafing, oil intrusion, or high resistance

  3. Perform a cylinder cutout test using a diagnostic service tool to confirm mechanical contribution

  4. Perform a relative or manual compression test to rule out mechanical failures like worn piston rings, burnt valves, or head gasket issues

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Disconnect the battery. Clean the area around the valve cover and fuel lines to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

  2. Access

Remove the engine valve cover to access the fuel injectors.

  3. Line Removal

Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the Cylinder 6 injector. (Note: OEM guidelines generally mandate replacing high-pressure fuel lines once they have been loosened to ensure proper sealing).

  4. Electrical Disconnection

Disconnect the electrical solenoid connector from the Cylinder 6 injector.

  5. Injector Removal

Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head bore.

  6. Cleaning

Thoroughly clean the injector bore and the seating surface at the bottom of the cup. Ensure the old copper sealing washer is removed and not stuck in the bore.

  7. Installation

Install the new injector equipped with a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.

  8. Reassembly

Install the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the specific OEM torque spec for your exact engine model. Install the new high-pressure fuel line and torque the fittings. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Valve Cover

Reinstall the valve cover with a new gasket.

  10. ECU Programming (IQA Code)

Use the CNH diagnostic tool to enter the new injector's trim code (IQA/IMA code, printed on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECU. This calibrates the ECU to the specific flow characteristics of the new injector.

  11. Bleed and Test

Prime the fuel system, start the engine, check for leaks, and clear the NH 3046 fault code.
