New Holland NH 3049 – Engine Controller (EDC / ECM): Battery voltage signal - ABOVE NORMAL
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the system voltage is too high (an overcharging condition). The electronic control module has detected that the voltage coming from the charging system exceeds the normal operating range (typically anything above 14.5 to 14.8 volts on a 12V system).
Applies to these machines
11 machines- T6
- T7
- TM
- TS
- TM115-TM190
- TS100A-TS135A
- 4700
- 9030E
- skid steers
- wheel loaders
- compact tractors
Check the cause
Perform a live voltage test across the battery terminals with the engine running at idle and at 1500 RPM with electrical loads turned on (voltage should not exceed 14.5 - 14.8 volts)
Perform a ground circuit voltage drop test between the battery negative terminal and the engine ground (difference should not exceed 0.2 volts)
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the alternator to the ECM and battery for erratic connections, corrosion, chafing, or resistance
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first to prevent accidental shorts, electrical shock, or sparks.
Clean Grounds
If the voltage drop test revealed high resistance, clean the main battery ground, chassis ground, and engine block ground connections with a wire brush. Re-secure them tightly.
Replace the Alternator / Voltage Regulator
If the wiring and grounds are intact but the system is still overcharging, the voltage regulator is faulty. Relieve tension on the alternator drive belt and remove it. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the rear of the alternator. Unbolt and remove the faulty alternator assembly. Install the new alternator, reconnect the wiring, and reinstall the drive belt (ensure proper tension).
Inspect the Battery
Check the battery for signs of damage, swelling, or boiling, as prolonged overcharging can severely damage the battery cells. Replace if necessary.
Verify Repair
Reconnect the negative battery cable, start the tractor, and verify that the charging voltage now sits steadily between 13.8V and 14.4V. Clear the NH 3049 fault code from the ECM.
