New Holland NH 3051 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Battery voltage signal - SOURCE HIGH
Issue description
The system has detected that the electrical voltage being supplied to the control module has exceeded the safe upper limit (typically anything consistently above 15 volts on a standard 12V system). This is most commonly caused by a failed voltage regulator inside the alternator, causing it to "run wild" and overcharge the system.

Check the cause
Test battery resting voltage with the engine off using a digital multimeter (should be around 12.6V)
Test charging voltage with the engine running across the battery terminals (should be 13.5V - 14.5V). A reading of 15V or higher indicates a failed voltage regulator overcharging the system
Check voltage directly at the ECM power supply pins if battery voltage is normal, to rule out a spiked voltage from a short circuit in the harness
Inspect the main charge wire from the alternator to the battery and the ECM wiring harness for melted insulation or shorts to other power sources
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative battery cable before performing electrical repairs to prevent shorts or shocks.
Locate the Alternator
Find the alternator mounted on the engine block.
Remove Connections
Disconnect the electrical connector plug and unbolt the main charge wire from the back of the alternator.
Remove the Drive Belt
Use a wrench or breaker bar to release the tension on the serpentine/V-belt tensioner, and slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
Dismount the Alternator
Remove the mounting bolts holding the alternator to the engine bracket and carefully extract the unit.
Replace the Regulator or Alternator
If your specific alternator features a removable, externally mounted voltage regulator on the rear casing, you can unscrew and replace just the regulator. If the regulator is internal and non-serviceable (which is common), you must replace the entire alternator assembly.
Reinstall
Mount the new alternator (or repaired unit) and torque the mounting bolts to the service manual specifications.
Reassemble
Route the drive belt back over the pulley and restore tension. Reconnect the main charge wire and electrical plug.
Test
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the tractor and verify with your multimeter that the charging voltage is now safely between 13.5V and 14.5V.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the NH 3051 fault code from the Engine ECM.
