New Holland NH 3057 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Cold start heater monitoring - NOT PLAUSIBLE

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is detecting an irregular or unexpected electrical signal from the cold start heater circuit (commonly referred to as the intake manifold heater or grid heater). A "not plausible" reading means the voltage or current feedback the ECM is receiving does not match the commanded state of the heater, pointing to an open circuit, a short, a failed heater element, or a malfunctioning relay.

   Wiring and Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the ECM, the cold start heater relay, and the grid heater element. Look for chafed wires, short circuits (low side to battery or high side to ground), or disconnected plugs.

   Relay Testing: Test the main cold start heater relay (often a heavy-duty or solid-state relay) to ensure it is opening and closing properly when commanded by the ECM.

   Heater Element Continuity: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the grid heater element located on the intake manifold. An open circuit (infinite resistance) means the element has burned out.

   Power Supply Check: Verify that the relay is receiving proper battery voltage and that the ECM is outputting the correct trigger signal.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental engagement of the high-amperage heater circuit.

   Access the Components

   Locate the cold start heater relay and the grid heater element (typically mounted between the intake air piping and the intake manifold).

   Replace Faulty Wiring/Relay

   If the diagnostic checks isolated the issue to the relay or a damaged harness jumper, replace the relay or repair/replace the specific harness section (e.g., Grid Heater Jumper).

   Replace the Grid Heater (if failed)

   Disconnect the heavy-gauge electrical cables from the grid heater terminals. Unbolt the intake horn/piping to expose the grid heater. Remove the old grid heater and clean the mating surfaces. Install the new grid heater using new gaskets to prevent boost leaks. Reinstall the intake piping and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect and Test

   Reattach the electrical cables to the heater and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes

   Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the NH 3057 fault code from the Engine ECM. Cycle the ignition to verify the cold start sequence initiates without triggering the code.
