New Holland NH 3059 – Engine Controller (ECM / EDC): Cold start heater monitoring - NO SIGNAL

This fault code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) is not receiving the expected electrical feedback signal from the cold start heater circuit (also known as the intake manifold heater, grid heater, or thermostart plug). The "NO SIGNAL" condition typically points to an open circuit, a blown high-current fuse, a failed power relay, or a disconnected/damaged wiring harness preventing the ECM from monitoring the heater's status.

   Verify Operating Conditions: Ensure the temperature is actually low enough to command the heater on.

   Check Configuration: On some models, verify that the grid heater is actively enabled in the tractor's configuration menu (e.g., the H3 configuration menu).

   Inspect Fuses: Check the main high-current fuse dedicated to the grid heater (200A Mega fuse, Blue).

   Inspect Wiring and Connections: Visually inspect the grid heater relay wiring harness and the heavy-gauge cables running from the battery/alternator to the relay and then to the intake heater element for corrosion, loose terminal nuts, or severed wires.

   Test the Relay and Element: Use a multimeter to test the grid heater power relay for proper switching operation and test the intake manifold heater element for continuity to ensure it hasn't burned out.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts, as the grid heater circuit carries very high amperage (up to 200 amps).

   Replace Blown Fuses

   If the 200A grid heater fuse is blown, unbolt it from the fuse holder and install a new one.

   Replace the Relay

   If faulty, locate the grid heater power relay. Unbolt the heavy-gauge power cables and unplug the low-voltage trigger connector. Mount the new relay and torque the connections to specification.

   Replace the Wiring Harness

   If damaged, disconnect the old grid heater relay wiring harness from the ECM and relay, and route the replacement harness, securing it with zip ties away from high-heat sources.

   Replace the Heater Element

   If open, remove the intake air tubing connected to the manifold. Unbolt the grid heater element, clean the mating surfaces, and install the new element with new gaskets. Reconnect the heavy-gauge power wire.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the ON position in cold weather. Verify that the cold start/grid heater indicator lamp illuminates on the dash. You should also notice a slight drop in battery voltage on the monitor, confirming the heater is drawing current.

   Use a diagnostic tool or CAN-BUS emulator to clear the inactive NH 3059 fault code from the Engine ECM.
