New Holland NH 3076 – Engine ECU: Injector solenoid valve Cylinder 2 - NOT PLAUSIBLE

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an electrical anomaly in the circuit for the fuel injector solenoid on Cylinder 2. The signal falls outside the expected operating parameters, but the ECU cannot specifically classify the failure, resulting in an engine misfire, rough running, and an automatic power derate.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 2 injector for chafing, melted insulation, or loose/corroded pins at both connectors.

  2. Measure the resistance across the Cylinder 2 injector's solenoid pins and compare it to a known good injector (e.g., Cylinder 1) to check for a burnt internal coil.

  3. Test the injector wiring harness for continuity from the ECU plug to the injector plug, and check for a short to ground or short to battery voltage.

  4. Perform a swap test by exchanging the Cylinder 2 injector with another cylinder. If the fault follows the injector, the injector is faulty. If it remains NH 3076, the issue is in the wiring or Engine ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Disconnect the machine's battery. Thoroughly clean the area around the valve cover and fuel rail to prevent dirt from entering the sensitive high-pressure fuel system.

  2. Access

    Remove the engine valve cover (on many FPT engines, the injectors are located under the rocker cover).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the Cylinder 2 injector.

  4. Remove Fuel Lines

    Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the Cylinder 2 injector. Immediately cap all open fuel ports on the rail and injector to prevent contamination.

  5. Extraction

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp bolt and carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  6. Cleaning

    Thoroughly clean the injector bore in the cylinder head. Ensure the old copper sealing washer is removed and the seating surface is completely spotless.

  7. Installation

    Install a new copper sealing washer onto the new injector. Insert the injector into the bore, install the hold-down clamp, and torque the bolt to the specific OEM specification for your engine model.

  8. Reassembly

    Install a new high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec. Reconnect the electrical harness. Reinstall the valve cover with a new gasket.

  9. ECU Calibration

    Reconnect the battery. You must use the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) diagnostic laptop to enter the new injector's IMA/QR calibration code (found on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECU.

  10. Testing

    Prime the fuel system, clear the NH 3076 fault code, start the engine, and check for leaks and proper operation.
