New Holland NH 3086 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injector Booster Voltage C2 - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The ECU has detected that the voltage on the specific injector booster circuit (Capacitor 2) is exceeding the maximum allowable threshold. This condition is generally caused by a short circuit to battery power in the injector wiring harness, a shorted injector solenoid, or an internal hardware failure within the ECU itself (a shorted or overcharged capacitor).

Check the cause

  1. Check the alternator and charging system to verify it is not overcharging and causing system-wide high voltage spikes.

  2. Visually inspect the engine and injector wiring harness (often under the valve cover) for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires bridging to a power source.

  3. Disconnect the injector harness from the ECU and test the Bank 2 injector pins with a multimeter for a short to battery voltage.

  4. Measure the resistance across the terminals of each Bank 2 injector to check for internally shorted solenoids.

  5. Inspect the ECU connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins that could bridge circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical damage during testing.

  2. Access the Harness

    Gain access to the engine ECU and the fuel injectors. If the engine utilizes an internal injector harness, remove the engine valve cover.

  3. Isolate the Circuit

    Disconnect the injector wiring harness from both the injectors and the ECU.

  4. Test and Repair Wiring

    Using a digital multimeter, check the isolated wiring harness for shorts to voltage. If a short is found, repair the damaged wire or replace the entire injector wiring harness.

  5. Test Injectors

    If the harness is intact, test the injectors. Replace any injector that fails the OEM resistance specification.

  6. Address the ECU

    If both the harness and injectors test perfectly normal, the fault is an internal hardware failure within the ECU (the C2 booster capacitor circuit has failed). The ECU will need to be replaced or sent to a specialized module repair facility.

  7. Reassembly and Clearing

    Reassemble all components, reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool, and run the engine to verify the repair.
