NH 3089

New Holland NH 3089 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Increment speed signal - SOURCE LOW / Crankshaft Sensor - Invalid Signal

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has determined that the signal from the crankshaft speed sensor is invalid, missing, or experiencing excessive electrical noise. This can cause the engine to fail to start, shut down unexpectedly, or be forced into a backup mode.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness leading to the crankshaft sensor for chafing, rubbing, tearing, reversed connections, or short circuits.

  2. Ensure the connector pins at the sensor and at the ECU (e.g., pins 25C and 24C) are clean, tight, and free of corrosion.

  3. Test the inductive crankshaft sensor using a multimeter (a healthy OEM Bosch sensor typically has a resistance of approximately 900 ohms).

  4. Check for excessive electrical noise on the circuit, which can trigger the invalid signal condition.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery

    This prevents electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Locate the crankshaft position sensor

    It is an inductive type sensor typically located on the left front part of the engine block or near the flywheel housing.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness connector

    Disconnect the connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the retaining bolt

    Remove the bolt holding the sensor in place.

  5. Extract the old sensor and inspect the mounting port

    Check for dirt or metallic debris that could interfere with the magnetic signal.

  6. Install the new crankshaft position sensor

  7. Tighten the retaining bolt

    Tighten to the OEM torque specification (typically 8 ± 2 Nm for standard Bosch inductive sensors on these engines).

  8. Reconnect the electrical harness

    Ensure the locking tab clicks securely.

  9. Reconnect the battery

  10. Clear the fault code

    Use a diagnostic tool or CAN-bus DTC eraser to clear the NH 3089 fault code from the Engine ECU.

  11. Start the engine and verify the repair

    Verify that the code does not return and that the engine RPM reads smoothly without stalling.
