New Holland NH 3094 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Engine Speed Sensing - SOURCE LOW

This fault code indicates that the engine speed sensor (crankshaft or camshaft position sensor) is sending a voltage signal that is below the acceptable threshold, or the circuit is shorted to ground. Without a reliable engine speed signal, the machine may experience erratic shifting, limited gear selection, or the engine may default to a backup operating mode.

   Trace the wiring harness from the engine speed sensor to the Engine ECU. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas where the wire might be shorting to the chassis ground.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins. Look for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins that could cause a voltage drop.

   Remove the sensor and inspect the magnetic tip. Check for a buildup of metal shavings, which can distort the magnetic field, or physical damage (cracks or scoring) indicating contact with the internal gear.

   If the sensor is threaded and adjustable, verify that the air gap between the sensor tip and the tone wheel/flywheel gear is set correctly. An excessive gap will result in a low signal.

   Preparation

   Turn off the ignition key and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   The engine speed sensor is typically threaded into the flywheel housing or the front engine timing gear case.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector. Loosen the retaining locknut (or retaining bolt, depending on the sensor style) and carefully pull/thread the old sensor out of the housing.

   Installation

   For adjustable threaded sensors: Slowly thread the new sensor into the housing until the magnetic core gently makes contact with the internal gear teeth. Back the sensor out (counterclockwise) by the manufacturer-specified amount to set the air gap (commonly 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn). Hold the sensor in place and tighten the locknut to secure it. (Note: If your machine uses a fixed-flange sensor, simply insert it into the clean bore and tighten the retaining bolt).

   Reconnection

   Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the connector clicks and locks.

   Testing & Clearing

   Reconnect the battery and start the engine. Verify that the engine RPM is displaying correctly on the dashboard. Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the onboard diagnostic menu to clear the inactive NH 3094 fault code.
