New Holland NH 3095 – Engine Controller (ECM / EDC): Engine Speed Sensing - NO SIGNAL

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost the signal from the engine speed sensor (typically the camshaft or crankshaft position/speed sensor). When this signal is lost, the engine cannot accurately determine its rotational speed or timing position, often defaulting to a Backup Mode to prevent a complete shutdown.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the camshaft/crankshaft speed sensor for an open circuit, chafing, or electrical disturbances.

  2. Check if the speed sensor is mounted correctly and securely. A loose sensor can increase the air gap and result in a No Signal condition.

  3. Verify that the camshaft sensor position does not deviate from the crankshaft position. A mechanical issue, such as a skipped tooth on the timing gear or belt, can cause the ECU to reject the signal or fail to read it properly.

  4. Test the sensor's resistance and voltage output while cranking to determine if the sensor itself has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    Identify the engine speed sensor (camshaft or crankshaft) on your specific engine block.

  2. Inspect and Clean

    Disconnect the sensor's pigtail wiring harness. Clean the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and check for corrosion or pushed-back pins.

  3. Test the Circuit

    Use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage and ground from the ECM.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails to produce a signal, remove the retaining bolt and pull the old sensor out of the block. Install the new OEM speed sensor, ensuring it is seated flush so the air gap is correct.

  5. Verify Mechanical Timing

    If a new sensor does not resolve the issue, inspect the engine's timing components to ensure the camshaft and crankshaft are perfectly synchronized.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool or CAN-bus DTC eraser to clear code NH 3095 from the Engine ECU memory. Run the machine to verify the code does not return.
