New Holland NH 3097 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): CAN (B) Hardware - NO SIGNAL

Issue description

Communication loss, timeout, or hardware failure on the private CAN B network, preventing data from being transmitted or received properly.

Check the cause

  1. Check for shutdown timing ghost codes — if the code only appears when the tractor is turned off, it may be a normal operational quirk due to timing differences between the ECU and XCM.

  2. Check for accompanying code NH 3099 — if both appear exclusively at key-off, no hardware repair is likely needed.

  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the ECM to the XCM for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or corrosion at the connector pins.

  4. Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the battery disconnected — measure resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins on the private CAN B network (should read approximately 60 ohms).

Repair steps

  1. Verify the Fault State

    Connect a diagnostic tool and check if NH 3097 is active or stored. If it is stored and the operator reports no drivability issues, clear the code and run the machine to see if it returns during normal operation.

  2. Isolate the Circuit

    If the fault is active, turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  3. Inspect Connectors

    Locate the ECM (on the engine) and the XCM (typically located under the Electronic Draft Control panel or right-hand console). Disconnect the CAN B harness connectors at both modules. Clean any corrosion and ensure no pins are pushed back or bent.

  4. Test Wiring Continuity

    Using a multimeter, test the CAN B High and CAN Low wires for end-to-end continuity between the ECM and XCM.

  5. Test for Shorts

    Check for continuity between the CAN wires and a known good ground, as well as between the CAN wires and the power supply lines, to rule out a short circuit.

  6. Repair Wiring

    If a break or short is found, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the affected harness segment.

  7. Module Replacement (Last Resort)

    If the wiring harness, terminating resistors, and connector pins all test perfectly, the CAN transceiver inside either the ECM or the XCM has likely failed, requiring module replacement and reprogramming by a dealer.

  8. Clear and Verify

    Reconnect all components, restore battery power, clear the fault codes, and test run the tractor to verify the repair.
